Hair loss, solved like
a good mystery.
Everyone loses 50 to 100 hairs a day. When you notice bald patches or real thinning, a dermatologist can find the cause and help stop or slow it.
Many causes, one most common culprit.
There are many causes of hair loss. Women may notice thinning hair after giving birth. People under a lot of stress can see noticeable hair loss. Some diseases and medical treatments are the culprit, and even the way you style and care for your hair can have an effect.
The most common cause is hereditary hair loss, also called male-pattern baldness, female-pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. About 80 million men and women in the United States have it.
While there is no cure, there are treatments that can stop or slow its progression. The first step is to see your dermatologist, who is specially trained in conditions of the skin, hair and nails.
Options that start working early.

Your dermatologist acts like a detective.
Because so many things cause hair loss, diagnosis starts with questions: did it happen suddenly or gradually, what medicines do you take, any allergies or recent dieting? Women may be asked about menstrual cycles, pregnancies and menopause.
Your dermatologist will carefully examine your scalp and hair, and may gently pull on hairs or look at hair elsewhere on your body. Sometimes a quick in-office scalp biopsy or a blood test is needed to solve the case.
Finding the cause can take time, and accurate information from you is the most important clue.

Answers are one call or one visit away.
The sooner you start, the more you keep.
Once your dermatologist knows what is causing the hair loss, they can tell you what to expect. Sometimes the best course is no treatment at all and your hair will start to regrow on its own. In some cases, changing your habits will stop the hair loss.
Sometimes treatment can restore hair growth and volume. Hair loss is harder to treat once a lot of hair is gone, so it pays to start early.
